Active Algarve

Being outdoors is a wonderful and fundamental part of Algarvian life. The favourable weather throughout the majority of the year certainly allows for endless beach days, but also for many activities and sports to thrive. Thus, attracting people from all over the world with different interests.

The crashing waves along the unspoilt beaches we know and love are also celebrated by surfers worldwide. The wind that keeps us cool during the hot summers, also attracts avid windsurfers and golfers. And, the rolling landscape and miles of unspoilt land lay down the foundation for a stunning horse ride or epic cycling adventure. Portugal is soon becoming a hive for active individuals, those looking to start a new hobby or for people who simply enjoy spending time outdoors.

  • Golf

Undeniably, one of the most popular sports here in the Algarve whereby people travel continents to experience. Since its humble beginnings around 125 years ago, it has come a long way. This year (2024), Portugal bagged the two biggest trophies at the 10th edition of the World Golf Awards which were the ‘Best Golf Destination in the World’ and, for the second consecutive year, the ‘Best Golf Destination in Europe’.

Boavista’s dynamic golf course really captures the essence of the Algarve. Inspired by the area's natural landscape, the 18 hole course invites players of all levels to enjoy an interesting and varied game. Guests can also enjoy the well maintained facilities such as the driving range, put practising area and of course, the onsite clubhouse.

  • Padel Tennis

Tennis and the newer, evergrowing Padel Tennis are thriving all over the world, but particularly down in this corner of Europe.

There are a number of reasons for its peak in popularity in recent years. Padel is considered easier than Tennis and the courts are also a third of the size. For many, it is quick and easy to learn. It is also usually played in doubles, making it a social sport. Although, you can also take part as a single player.

Padel tennis is currently considered the fastest growing sport in the world. Due to its simple and inclusive nature, anyone regardless of age or ability can start playing. The most successful players tend to win by strategy, rather than with strength or skill making it one of the few sports whereby men, women and youths can play together.

  • Surfing

Probably the Algarves' worst kept secret… Not only does it compete with the likes of Bali, California and Costa Rica, it’s also home to ‘The Worlds Biggest Wave’ in Nazare which is along Portugal's infamous Silver Coast. The beaches and surrounding areas are significantly less busy than its competitors which allow for unlimited options for keen surfers and beginners. The Algarve also has the advantage of two completely different coastlines (the south and the west) meaning there are waves to suit all capabilities and great conditions all year round.

There are estimated to be over 100 Padel courts just in the Algarve so it's extremely accessible. Although most enjoy it as a hobby, some local players are getting competitive and have taken part in both regional and national competitions.

In October 2024, Boavista opened two, state of the art Padel courts to their members and to the public which are available to rent for groups as well as for people to take lessons. Prices range from 24 to 28 euros depending on whether you’re a Boavista member. Opening times are from 8.15 am to 5.15 am and lessons are available individually or for groups up to four people.

  • Hiking & Cycling

Discover diverse landscapes from rolling mountains to dramatic coastline, featuring charming, traditional villages and stunning beaches. Hiking and Cycling often go hand in hand here as a lot of the popular trails often feature routes for on foot and as well as by bike.

There are an abundance of walking groups and associations who value and respect the environment and unique ecosystem in the Algarve. This is also a great way to meet like minded people for those who are visiting or new to the area.

  • Windsurfing

Windsurfing is a thrilling sport, often not for the fainthearted. Since the 1960’s, many people, often from sailing or surfing backgrounds, have enjoyed this sport. Windsurfers can enjoy a more relaxed cruise to more dynamic and fast freestyling and wave riding. Windsurfing in the Algarve offers the perfect conditions as there is a long, unspoilt coastline paired with its distinctive gales of wind. On the southern coast of the Algarve, the shallow water between Albufeira and Sagres provides ideal conditions for great windsurfing sessions.

  • Kayaking/ Paddleboarding

Another water sport which may be less daunting to give a go if you’re less experienced… This is a great way to explore the coastline, rivers or lakes from another perspective. There are plenty of tour operators and places to rent your own kayaks or paddle boards making for a great alternative activity to suit all ages and abilities.

  • Horse riding

Another incredible way to really take in the beautiful landscape, but on four legs instead of two… For animal lovers and thrill seekers, this could be a great activity. And, if you’re a confident rider, the quickest way to travel across the beach is by galloping! Although many riding centres across the Algarve offer horses and trails for a range of capabilities.

  • Yoga & Pilates

In the Algarve and Lagos in particular, there are lots of Yoga and Pilates centres and a great community surrounding them. There are plenty of centres in town but some are situated in nature or even on the beach! Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a humble beginner, there are classes and relaxing retreats to suit everyone.
